Biggest single investment for over 50 years
Launched in February 2004, the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) initiative is the biggest single government investment in improving school buildings for over 50 years. The aim is to rebuild or renew every one of England's 3,500 state secondary schools during the 15-year lifetime of the £40billion programme.

There are currently 72 Local Education Authorities involved in BSF under waves 1 - 6.

Other funding schemes 2005-2008

  • Basic Need Funding is used for the provision of new schools or major extensions in order to satisfy the need for new pupil places.

  • Modernisation Funding will support the full replacement or refurbishment of school buildings and in particular, the replacement of temporary buildings.
  • The Devolved Formula programme gives maintained schools direct funding to help support the capital needs of their buildings.
